Lecture The appeal of a sketch or what we know about the history of Latvian art photography by Katrīna Teivāne-Korpa (Latvia)

The history of Latvian art photography continues to be a field of research teeming with fascinating discoveries. This is especially true for its first magnificent period – the Golden Age of the industry at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as during the 1920s and 30s. The lecture will highlight the importance of the Latvian Photographic Society and the work of photographers Mārtiņš Buclers, Jānis Rieksts, Vilis Rīdzenieks, Roberts Johansons, Eduards Gaiķis, Indriķis Kalcenavs, Kārlis Bauls and others. The work of these photographers will be explored in the context of dominant tendencies in photographic art, pictorialism and modernism in the early 20th century.
Katrīna Teivāne-Korpa (1978) is a research student at the Art Academy of Latvia, where she is currently completing her doctorate ‘Photographer Robert Johansons’ creative practice and the context of Latvian photographic history from the beginning of the 20th century until World War II’. She works as a librarian in the Konrāds Ubāns Arts Reading Room at the National Library of Latvia. Katrīna Teivāne-Korpa has been writing about photography and art since 2007.
