GUNTA PODIŅA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION “WE ARE NOT INVISIBLE” LATVIAN MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY 6.04. – 7.05.2017
Photography exhibition “We Are Not Invisible” featuring works of Latvian photographer Gunta Podiņa will be exhibited from April 6 in Latvian Museum of Photography. This exhibition is a part of Riga Photography Biennial off-year 2016 – 2018 program.
Photo series “We Are Not Invisible” displays the changes of Strazdumuiža, historical and current events, looking at the Soviet times and the current situation in Latvia. Strazdumuiža is the village on the outskirts of the capital Riga, it is home to a larger community of over two hundred blind or partially sighted residents. Living conditions in this community are not satisfactory, employment opportunities are minimal, social benefits alone are not sufficient for the acquisition of everyday equipment needed for a disabled person nor they are enough to cover children's schooling expenses in universities. Blind and visually impaired people spend their lives in narrow and non-renovated apartments, with fewer opportunities to move freely outside their house that contributes to minimal contact with the outside world.
Despite the difficulties and thanks to the steadfast will to be useful in society, many of them have found new employment opportunities. One of the main characters of this photo series Kaspars is working as a mechanic and helps villagers to repair broken appliances. In this blind and visually impaired community can also be found those people who are occupied with translation, work on computers or create music. The exhibition “We Are Not Invisible” is able to draw public attention towards the visual disabled people and their way of life that might surprise viewers.
Gunta Podiņa (1974) is social documentary photographer based in Sweden, specializing in social, cultural anthropology and environmental issues. Gunta has MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from University of Arts London. Her documentary projects aims to deconstruct conventional interpretations of people and environment, whilst making meaningful commentaries on current social and cultural issues. The projects and commissions she undertakes often deal with our relationships with notions of identity, sense of belonging and social interactions.
