This publication marks the Off-Year Event of the Riga Photography Biennial 2017 and reflects on its events and participants, offering an in-depth analysis of the themes explored by its exhibition programme and discursive events.

Gunta Podiņa’s exhibition We are not invisible brings to our attention various problems encountered by people with visual impairments and depicts their daily lives, which could be a revelation to many viewers.

The large double screen video installation ΜΗΧΑΝΙΚΟΣ takes its title from an odd Greek folk dance from the island of Kalymnos. The name means “mechanical”, and the dance is also known as “The Sponge Diver Dance”.

Snakes and Ladders is an interactive online exhibition based on moving photographs that Latvian visual artist Vika Eksta creates by employing the format of animated GIF. The exhibition is interactive and takes place on Asa Nisi Masa, an online gallery dedicated to contemporary and new media art. An offline version of Snakes and Ladders, in the form of a movie trailer, will be projected in cinema halls in Riga during the opening weekend of Riga Photography Biennal 2017.

The discussion of Riga Photography Biennale 2017 examines current trends in modern photography and new artists who continue to transform the complex identity of the field of photography. Among the invited European contemporary art experts are representatives from education, museums, information media, residencies and festivals, whose interests comprise the current photo medium and collaboration with new artists.

The lecture is organised as part of the education programme of the Riga Photography Biennial and is dedicated to the freshest and most youthful Polish photography to date, which is characterised by a distinctly feminine voice. The decision to focus on female photographers as part of this Biennale is not unintentional. A closer look at this local Polish, as well as the global art scene,shows that currently the field of photography is dominated by women and feministic vision.

The exhibition Public = Private features the work of French artists in which architecture is regarded and dealt with not so much realistically (the construction of buildings and cities) as it is symbolically (the designing of social and individual lives and ideas). These artists make the viewer contemplate how effectively architecture shapes our concepts of environment, culture and society.
