The Riga Photography Biennial – NEXT 2019 contemporary art event will take place in Riga and Berlin from 4 April until 28 June, inviting audiences to exhibitions, a portfolio review, lectures and a symposium about activism in the latest art from the Baltics. The biennial’s off-year programme NEXT has been developed with a focus on emerging artists who are at the beginning of their creative careers and provides an opportunity to present their work in a wider context.

The Riga Photography Biennial’s and ISSP Gallery’s Award for the competition ‘Seeking the Latest in Photography!’ has been presented to Annija Muižule (Latvia) for her series ‘Joyful Businessmen Throwing Papers and Having Fun in the Office’. The special prize – opportunity to publish a photography book with the NoRoutine Books publishing house was presented to Reinis Lismanis and his series ‘Trial and Error’. The winning series by Annija Muižule will be exhibited during her solo exhibition at the ISSP Gallery as part of the Riga Photography Biennial’s Off-year Programme 2019. The exhibition will launch on 4 April 2019.

The launch of the main Biennial exhibition ‘Screen Age I: Self-Portrait’ at Riga Art Space on 12 April at 18:00, curated by Inga Brūvere and Marie Sjovold (NO) in cooperation with the Association of Culture Institutions of Riga City Council and Riga Art Space. The exhibition explores how technologies influence and alter our perception of the self, relationships and nature. Also featuring an awards ceremony and the work of the award winning finalists of Riga Photography Biennial Award 2018 ‘Seeking the Latest in Photography!’ - Diāna Tamane (LV), Taavi Suisalu (EE) and Kristīne Madjare (LV). The exhibition is part of a wider programme celebrating the centenary of the Republic of Latvia.

On 5th of April Riga Photography Biennial 2018 exhibition’s Today I’m a Mermaid. Tomorrow I’ll Be a Unicorn will have an opening event at the gallerie MuseumLV, Riga with a a performance – tamed fashion show Kebab by Ivars Grāvlejs and Margrieta Griestiņa.
