The Riga Photography Biennial (RPB) is an international contemporary art event, focusing on photography as an art practice, centering on Latvia, the Baltic and European region as its priority.
As a result of the rapid development of modern technology we are forced to reevaluate the importance of the image and the message it provides. Photography is everywhere today. A range of other concepts, creating the need to discover new content, has joined classical photography, as an aesthetic and image documenting concept. How has the understanding of photography and its presence within the framework of works of art changed over time?
The first Biennial was taken place in April 2016 and was focusing ideologically on the geopolitical peculiarity of our region – memories, dreams and reality, which gain a particular importance due to a historic event. It will be taking place in the period leading up to Latvia’s national celebrations. In 2018, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Romania will be marking their centenaries, as will Finland (in 2017), or the renewal of their nation’s existence as in the case of Poland (2018).
Riga Photography Biennial 2018 will take place in April. Biennial will draw particular attention on new artists, announcing applications for the Seeking the Latest! in Photography Award.
The Riga Photography Biennial is organized by the Riga Photography Biennial society in collaboration with a number of Latvian and foreign institutions.
